Details: Norfolk Karate Academy / Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Norfolk is Norfolk’s largest martial arts facility. The 8000 square foot facility has three matted training areas, a private room, two large changing rooms, a strength training area, elliptical trainers, mirrored walls, stretching bars, a guest waiting/observation area, and a martial arts book/video library. The main training area is well equipped with hanging and pedestal bags and a variety of target shields and pads. The school is located at 814A 45th Street two blocks from Old Dominion University’s Ted Constant Center and only minutes from Norfolk Naval Base and downtown Norfolk.

Kids Program Detail: Youth Karate - In our Youth Karate classes, we teach how to strike with power, move with balance and coordination, and avoid being hit. We employ traditional training methods (forms/kata, repetition, emphasis on proper technique and body mechanics) while stressing the practical application for self-defense to develop a solid foundation for martial arts proficiency as an adult. Forms (kata) serve as our link to traditional training methods and is a proven method for developing powerful stances and understanding of body mechanics. We supplement karate with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. This is NOT a mixed martial arts class. The focus is on self-defense, not sport. Gracie Bullyproof® - We teach the Gracie Bullyproof program consisting of the Little Champs course for 5-8 year olds and the Jr. Grapplers course for 9-12 year olds. Our focus is on self-defense, not sport. Our Certified Training Centers in Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach are the exclusive providers of these exceptional courses developed by the famous Gracie University in Torrance, California. PeeWee Program - The PeeWee Program starts 3-5 year olds on their martial arts journey in a way that will encourage them to stay the course throughout their lives. We’ve found the key to building a foundation for martial arts proficiency is to use games and fun exercises to keep them coming back for more. The program consists of two weekly classes that integrate elements of karate and jiu-jitsu to provide a well-rounded introduction to martial arts. Classes last 30 minutes and consist of a warm-up and stretching, listening and gross motor skill exercises, striking and blocking drills, and jiu-jitsu games.

Woman Only Program Detail: Women Empowered® is the official Gracie self-defense program for women based on the techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). In this 15-lesson program, we will teach you how to neutralize the 20 most common attacks ranging from having your hair grabbed to being pinned to the ground by a weapon-bearing assailant. You can start the program at any time and participate in any class without previous experience. Unlike most self-defense systems that rely heavily on strength, speed, and coordination, the techniques in the Women Empowered program employ leverage, technique, and timing, so anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, can make them work against larger opponents. Once you complete the Women Empowered program, you may test for promotion to pink belt! ONCE YOU EARN YOUR PINK BELT, YOU MAY ATTEND WOMEN EMPOWERED CLASSES FOR FREE FOREVER! If you want to learn to defend yourself in a fun, safe and cooperative environment, the Women Empowered program is for you.
