Details: Gracie Humaitá (pronounced ‘oo-mai-TAH’) is the name of the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in the world. Founded by Hélio Gracie and his brothers in the 1920s, the Gracie Humaitá team represents the purest and most direct connection to the founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Today, the name also represents the network of schools around the world that serve as direct representatives of that lineage and of Hélio’s son, Royler Gracie. Gracie Humaitá Austin is a key part of the global Gracie Humaitá network. We are the ONLY school in Austin that is a direct affiliate of the original Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy in Brazil. While nearly every Jiu-Jitsu academy can claim at least a distant connection to the Gracie family through their instructors (and their instructor’s instructor), we are proud to be able to represent a direct lineage to the founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Our instructor, Paulo "Coelho" Brandao, has ben a long-time representative of the family and received his black belt directly from Royler Gracie in 1995. We are always working hard to build the foundation for our team, and we look forward to having you join us. Welcome to our tradition.

Kids Program Detail: Gracie Humaitá Kids Jiu-jitsu is a fantastic way to promote an active and healthy lifestyle for kids of any age. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a martial art and combat sport based on ground fighting and submission holds. At Gracie Humaitá, our students learn a self-defense system that uses leverage to control opponents, without throwing punches or kicks. Our approach at Gracie Humaitá Kids helps our students increase self-esteem, discipline and focus through consistent training and a positive support system at the academy. Jiu-jitsu also teaches its practitioners how to stay calm and in control even when under pressure. Aside from teaching Jiu-jitsu fundamentals through to more advanced techniques, our experienced coaches also work with every student on improving: Physical capabilities such as hand-eye coordination, strength, agility and flexibility; Listening skills; Self-control, respect and discipline; Increasing physical attributes such as hand-eye coordination, strength, agility and flexibility.
