Gyms Details:

Head Professor: David Sigler

Details: This is a gym where the old meets the new. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy that studies a blend of traditional and contemporary styles of jiu-jitsu, offering both Gi and No-Gi classes. This gym is located in the North Bend/Coos Bay area of Coos County, Oregon, with a rich history of industries like logging and fishing. Coos Bay is the largest Oregon coastal town with new and growing businesses, majestic beaches, hiking, and a diverse community. NWMA Coos Bay was founded in November 2018 by black belt instructors Professor David Sigler and Professor Katie Ericson. Professor Katie Ericson is the first female black belt born and raised in Coos Bay. Professor Katie and Professor David met at the Northwest Martial Arts in Eugene, where they both received their black belts. They trained under Professor Harold Utterback and Professor Ryan Kelly, who trained under Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legends like Megaton Dias, Royler Gracie, and Helio Gracie. NWMA Coos Bay has been established through a passion for the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a strong sense of community. Professor Katie wanted to return to her roots and open a martial arts gym in her hometown of Coos Bay. Growing up in Coos Bay, Professor Katie could see insufficient healthy activities for youth and adults alike. After a successful ten years in Eugene and graduating from the University of Oregon, Professor Katie gave back to her community by providing jobs, supporting local businesses, and offering programs to empower the gym’s members. With the academy, Katie hopes to reduce assault and crime rates while increasing mental and physical health opportunities by teaching Brazilian jiu-jitsu and promoting solid, healthy relationships within the team. NWMA Coos Bay strives to ensure members feel confident in their self-defense abilities. It encourages all students to be the best versions of themselves while having valuable and precise Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques. NWMA Coos Bay is the epitome of a beginner-friendly small-town gym with a family atmosphere. When you walk through the doors, you will feel safe and train with a team that encompasses growth and passion for the art and will support you through your jiu-jitsu journey. One thing is for sure - NWMA Coos Bay produces winners, as we have team members who have competed in competitions and placed on top. Ultimately, NWMA Coos Bay is the perfect place to start and continue your Brazilian jiu-jitsu journey.
