Details: Jorge grew up in one of the toughest, crime-ridden ‘favelas’ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1979, at age five, he was recruited off the streets by sixth-degree Judo black belt and Carlson Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner Milton Ribeiro. For the next thirteen years he stayed with the sport, competing in standard rules and no-holds-barred events. At the age of 18, he was accepted to Airborne Ranger School, an elite Special Forces branch of the Brazilian military, where he taught ‘Use of Force’ classes as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu professor. By 1995, he was honorably discharged from the Army and returned home to give back to his old neighborhood, recruiting kids off the streets and into the dojo and teaching them the way he was taught. In 1996, Jorge came to Boston, as an invited athlete and fell in love with the USA and the opportunity it presented. He began a career in law enforcement in Rhode Island and started a family. In 2010 Jorge had the opportunity to open his own Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy with which he has been involved ever since.
